WorldSpace was the company that first brought the concept of Satellite Radio to the world. With global headquarters in Washington D.C., WorldSpace created the initial proprietary technology and programming infrastructure that both WorldSpace Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio are built on. Today, WorldSpace Satellite Radio provides 5% of XM Satellite Radio programming. Founder, chairman, and CEO Noah A. Samara owns 91% of WorldSpace.
The company is the only licensed provider of satellite-based digital radio outside of North America, South Korea, and Japan. Its broadcast coverage area includes most of Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. WorldSpace offers music, news, education, and entertainment channels to about 53,000 paying subscribers, more than a third of which are in India.
